Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic red blood cell disorder disproportionately affecting persons of African descent as well as affecting other ethnicities. The disease results in bouts of extreme pain, damage to vital organs and, for some, death in early childhood or adulthood.
The main objectives of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Greater Montgomery, Inc., (SCFGM, Inc.) are to give accurate information about sickle cell disease and related hemoglobinopathies, to provide testing and diagnostic services to interested persons, to counsel individuals with positive test results so they can make informed decisions about their lives and to provide supportive services for clients and their family members. All records of the Foundation are confidential.
The SCFGM, Inc. is aware that the solution to the sickle problem will come through research. On-going studies and medical technology have provided improved pain management strategies for sickle cell patients. However, until a viable cure is found, such program components as education, case management , counseling, screening, child service coordination, home health services, and youth summer camp exist to meet the needs of the spiraling caseload.
The SCFGM, Inc. was established as a community-based, non-profit organization on December 9, 1981 and has been working collaboratively with state, regional and local medical, educational and social service organizations to serve the common client community.
Today, the SCFGM, Inc. still considers education of the general public a major objective, targeting persons of child-bearing age. We have administered sickle cell awareness training to more than 30,000 individuals. With the changing demographics of our community, city and surrounding counties, our program must also expand its principal focus in the African American community to other ethnic groups such as Hispanics and Asians who are also susceptible to the disease.
The SCFGM, Inc. is exceedingly grateful to its many supporters and hopes to count you among that number. Please give generously to continue this important work.
