Protecting the Sierra Nevada since 1992

The Sierra Nevada Alliance protects and restores Sierra lands, water and wildlife to leave a positive legacy for future generations.

It all starts in the Sierra

From John Muir's writings in 1912, he gazed eastward from the summit of Pacheco Pass in the Diablo Range and looked upon the Sierra, miles in height, gloriously colored and radiant. It was wholly composed of light, like the wall of a celestial city. He did not call it the Nevada nor Snowy Range, but the Range of Light.

The Sierra Nevada is a vast mountain range that spans 400 miles north to south and 70 miles east to west. The majority of the range lies in California with part of the Carson Range expanding into Nevada. It's considered relatively young as it started to emerge from earth only around 5-20 million years ago. The Sierra is home to the famed Lake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in North America, and Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Range, standing at a mighty 14,505 feet.

The Sierra is unbelievably rich in natural resources. It contains 25% of California's land, 60% of its developed water supply, 60% of its animal diversity, 50% of its forest carbon all while hosting over 50 million visitors to the area each year.

A region at risk

Climate change and explosive wildfires put the Sierra Nevada at risk. Without your help, these threats could change the land and water forever. Despite the incredible importance of the Sierra's contributions, the Range of Light lacks the resources necessary to protect and restore the region’s natural ecosystem. The Sierra is often overlooked by lawmakers and misses out on funding that instead is directed to areas with higher population density.
