Too often minority language communities feel they must choose between progress on the one hand and their heritage identify and languageon the other. But this is a false dichotomy--they can have both. SIL LEAD supports communities so that they can pursue their own development goals without sacrificing their unique language and culture. 

Though close to 7,000 language communities exist globally, only a handful are used for formal instruction about proper healthcare and academics. This leaves children and adults at a great disadvantage as they have limited understanding of how they can prevent illness and disease within their family or how they can trade or purchase basic necessities for living without being cheated. Mother Tongue Based Education has been proven to increase children’s learning potential in both their mother tongue and their national language. It improves a child’s potential for achieving full literacy earlier in life, empowering them to break away from poverty and become independent. SIL-LEAD facilitates this process by:

Working with local community members to develop language writing guides and curriculum for educating their community about healthcare issues

Partnering with local governments, linguists and education professionals to adapt existing school curriculum and carefully develop it in mother-tongue languages so that the curriculum makes sense for each language

Developing Software that makes the curriculum development process sustainable for present and future generations to create, edit and publish teaching material locally

Training Teachers to implement the school curriculum in their local languages and assess students’ progress in learning in their mother tongue and the national language
