San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles

Have you been to The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles lately? We’ve done a little rearranging and we have a great new exhibit up on the walls. The Museum offers visitors a warm welcoming space with a unique experience where visitors can view compelling fiber art exhibits that provide an unparalleled opportunity to see fiber art up close and to talk with staff and artists about the works.

Don’t let our size fool you. Beyond working to identify, celebrate, collect, and preserve historical and modern textiles, the Museum creates exciting collaborations among community members, artists, and fiber art lovers. We are educating youth to understand and appreciate fiber art, and art in general, through on-site school tours and programs. We collaborate with Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence by teaching women the joys of quilting and the self-confidence it brings. 

This Museum’s operating budget is the smallest budget the Museum has ever had. We have shrunk it down as far as we can and still maintain the Museum’s programs and exhibitions. Our occupancy costs alone are more than $100,000 a year. It is a historic fact that arts organizations rely more heavily on contributions than any other nonprofit sector.

The competition for dollars to support the arts is more than fierce. We work extremely hard to raise as much money as we can from foundation, corporation, and government grants, but that accounts for only 11% of our total budget. Memberships and Admissions account for 12% of the total required to operate the Museum, pay staff, and pay the bills.
