Slow Food Lake Tahoe's mission is to connect our community to the enjoyment of good, clean and fair food by inspiring a self-reliant food culture. We educate the community about growing, preparing, and accessing local and sustainable food. Good, clean and fair food for all.

We host a variety of community projects and events to bring this mission to fruition including the Truckee Food Bank Garden, Grow Your Own classes, Skill Share Classes, the Edible Garden Tour, and Community Soup Night.

Our Food Bank Garden in the Truckee River Regional Park is where we grow food for our local hunger relief organization, Sierra Community House. In 2020, we donated over 400 pounds of fresh organic produce. In addition, we also provide gardening education for our volunteers, visiting school groups, and the general public with our annual gardening classes.

Slow Food Lake Tahoe is proud to announce that we are embarking on a new garden project, the Truckee Community Garden. Over the course of 2020, we have received many requests from the community for individual garden plots for their own cultivation. Not everyone in our area has the capacity or HOA approval to grow food where they live. To respond to that need and fulfill part of our organization's mission to reduce food insecurity, we have secured a 2,420 square foot plot adjacent to the Food Bank Garden from the Truckee Donner Parks and Recreation District where we will fence and construct a community gardening space.

Community Garden Features

Seasonal garden plots will be offered on a nominal sliding scale fee used to fund the maintenance and upkeep of the garden. The garden will include:

  • 2,420 square feet of graded garden area with 152 ft of fenced in perimeter including two 4-foot gates

  • 34 critter-proof covered beds of various sizes. This includes 3 wheelchair accessible beds and 4 standing beds for easier mobility.

  • Soil for each bed

  • Community hose bibs

  • A community tool shed with community tools

  • A central sitting area with benches

  • Decomposed granite pathway and wheelchair accessible area

  • Free Gardening Education

  • Composting at the adjacent Food Bank Garden

Your Donation Makes a Difference

Once the infrastructure is established, gardening can be an extremely affordable way to feed people, as we have seen in the Food Bank Garden. This will also help educate both adults and children about how to grow organic food and why it's important. We have the ardent hope that this will also be an opportunity for members of our community who come from other places to grow their heritage foods. Finally, it will be a place of community spirit and collaboration. And yes, it will taste good!
