The SHC's mission is to provide vulnerable individuals and families with personalized supportive services and tailored housing solutions.

We are committed to treating people with dignity and respect, always with the understanding that they are part of our community.

The SHC has been operating for over 20 years by providing services, resources, and support to help rebuild lives in Greater Somerville.

In 1985, our local community created the SHC in a grassroots effort to address the social crisis of homelessness. Neighbors, community activists, university students, faith-based leaders, business supporters, and city officials united to make the SHC's first endeavor -- the city's first emergency shelter for homeless adults -- a reality.

SHC now administers a total of ten programs within four categories:

- Prevention & Stabilization Services

- Sewell Street SRO

- Shelter Plus Care- Sobriety & Stability

- Better Homes I & II- Home For Good

SHC is considered Greater Somerville's lead agency in responding to homeless and hunger related situations and issues.
