The South Bay Literacy Council is a South Bay, Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on teaching people to speak, read, and write English effectively in order to better function in today’s complex society.

Comprised entirely of volunteers, we serve residents of all 18 South Bay cities and communities(Torrance, Lomita, Harbor City, Wilmington, San Pedro, Carson, Gardena, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, and El Segundo) in five learning centers located around the South Bay.

We have been teaching our students for FREE since 1981, and are always looking for volunteers and tutors.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is geared for people who are non-native speakers of English.

The Literacy for English Speakers (LES) program is for English-speaking persons who need help with reading and writing.

The Computer Aided Literacy (CAL) program is for both ESL and LES students, and reinforces the learning acquired through the two programs.

Please join us in our mission to reduce adult illiteracy!
