Thank you for your interest in the Southern Museum of Flight, located in Birmingham, Alabama, and very near to Shuttlesworth International Airport. 

The Southern Museum of Flight is dedicated to investigating, preserving, and promoting the rich stories of Southern Aviation and to providing exciting, interactive educational programming for people of all ages. 

Through collaborative partnerships with the community, the Southern Museum of Flight provides a continuum of exhibitions, displays, and educational services with a sincere devotion to cultural and historical literacy.  Additionally, the Southern Museum of Flight remains committed to the promotion of aviation science, as well as the encouragement of careers within the aviation industry. 

One of our goals is to expose our visitors, especially students in the South, to aviation "up close and personal", since those opportunities are now quite limited given the heightened airport security requirements of the Post 9-11 era, including those smaller airports right here in the vicinity of Birmingham. Additionally, we are a teaching Museum and we fulfill Alabama Course of Study Standards for various subjects related to aviation such as Math and Science.

Visitors relive important historical events in our Country's history through our exhibits, and a visit here informs our schoolchildren that a career in aviation is not only exciting but attainable through hard work and study. Our tours are tailored to all age groups and we especially enjoy giving tours to Schools.  

Our exhibits span early aviation to the present day, and our Visitors experience full size aircraft displays on the Wright Brothers, Experimental and Home Built aircraft, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Our showcase exhibit is dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen and we believe it is one of the finest exhibits in the country dedicated to these courageous Airmen and Ground Personnel.

Many on our staff have extensive Aviation experience, from Airborne Infantry soldiers to Aircrew, Mechanics, and Pilots, both Military and Civilian. We can provide our Visitors rich and informative first-hand accounts of our own Aviation experiences as well as relate the great aviation history and legacy that is unique to the South and to Alabama. For example, did you know that the very first flight school in the country was established here by the Wright Brothers in Montgomery, Alabama?
