Mission

We provide access to land, education and other resources necessary for people in the Greater Providence area to grow food in environmentally sustainable ways as a means to creating a food system where locally produced, affordable and nutritious food is available to all.

Programs

SCLT's major initiatives, which serve and engage people of all ages, include: Hands-on agricultural and environmental education through out-of-school-time programming for children and teens, school fieldtrips, public workshops, garden demonstration sites, and in-field mentoring with growers; 9 community gardens built on formerly vacant lots that enable 186 gardeners and their families from all over the world to join together to grow, consume and sell healthy, culturally-appropriate foods; City Farm, a 3/4 acre certified organic demonstration farm in the South Providence; Broad Street Farmers' Market, which provides disadvantaged residents with access to locally-grown produce, and a market venue for local farmers; Urban Edge farm (a 50-acre farm in nearby Cranston) where new farmers have a place to make the transition to commercial agriculture. Urban Edge Farm also produces and regularly donates farm-fresh food to area food pantries.
