SpeakeasyDC (formerly Washington Storytellers Theatre) is dedicated to elevating and expanding the art autobiographical story performance. Through our performances and classes, we give voice to life experiences, support artistic expression and excellence, build community, and promote understanding.

We produce over 20 storytelling shows a year, offer a variety of classes and training opportunities in the art of storytelling, and host a podcast (The Speakeasy Storycast).

Our monthly 2nd Tuesdays storytelling series--entering it’s 15th year on the 2nd Tuesday of every month– features 8-10 true stories on a given theme. We also develop new projects each year with a variety of partners such as SpeakeasyShorts (a story-film challenge with DC Shorts); Unraveled (a story-improv mash-up with Washington Improv Theater); My So Called Life with Sixth & I, and Story Showdown (a storytelling game show with Dance Place).

We  offer a variety of educational opportunities, including a one-day Storytelling Boot Camp,  two five-week comprehensive courses–Storytelling 101 for beginners and Storytelling 201 for intermediate level students,  master classes on specific skills and topics, outreach programs, Solo Story Performance Workshop, and on-site professional trainings. Our clients have included the Inter-American Development Bank, The Peace Corps, the National Assembly of Arts Agencies, to name a few.
