Special Olympics Utah was founded in 1971 to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities living in Utah with opportunities to participate in sports training and competition as an effort to enhance their physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being. Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts and skills with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Today, Special Olympics Utah provides programing to more than 2,500 youth and adults with intellectual disabilities annually.  We currently offer year-round training and competition in ten Olympic-style summer and winter sports. In addition, Special Olympics Utah provides ongoing fitness, health, and virtual programs and activities. Every Special Olympics Utah athlete participates for free. Persons with intellectual disabilities, regardless of ability level, may participate in sports and other programs offered by Special Olympics Utah. Individuals are eligible for training and competition at age eight and there is no upper age limit. Through the power of sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills, and success. Our athletes find joy, confidence, and fulfillment — on the playing field and in life. They also inspire people in their communities and elsewhere to open their hearts to a wider world of human talents and potential.

All donations to Special Olympics Utah support our providing year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities in communities throughout Utah. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, more people with intellectual disabilities have a chance to participate and experience the transformative powers of sports. More than 80 percent of our expenditures go to supporting program activities – including supporting local training and competition, developing education training and materials for our volunteer coaches, outreach to recruit more athletes, family support, and much more.

Whether you are looking for a way to play sports, be inspired or have an impact in your community, getting involved with Special Olympics is a great way to have fun and give back. For more information on Special Olympics Utah, please visit our website or write us at volunteer@sout.org.
