The Mission of this organization is to build and manage affordable accessible rental apartments for individuals/families with physical disabilities. It owns and operates four projects and helps residents establish/manage a network of support services that helps them live independently in the community, avoiding institutionalization and homelessness. All of this is carried out by the SCLAD Resource Center. Through careful management and fiscal controls, SCLAD has been successfully managing its projects and helping its residents and many others in the community for many years.
The insurance situation in Florida is forcing SCLAD to consume its savings in order to pay the extraordinary increase in the premium for property insurance, in particular wind coverage. In one instance, the premium went from $21, 000 in 2022 to $79,200 in 2023. Another insurance renewal is coming up at the end of September. The company insuring in 2022 has not yet provided a quote for wind coverage in 2023. SCLAD is bracing for the worst - that was the same course of action as before: offering an exorbitant premium at the last minute. The difference in this case is that savings have been slashed.
This situation is unsustainable. It is hurting the quantity and quality of its operation and putting at risk the lives of 74 families and countless others who rely on its services. There are few, if any, alternatives for the population SCLAD serves: an institution or homelessness.
This predicament, forced on SCLAD and many others, has placed SCLAD and all those it serves in a state of vulnerability. SCLAD needs the community's help and support to keep on doing its work for the most needy among us.
