SPORTSe is a positive place for our youth to be themselves while learning more about themselves. We have lessons and activities on topics that help them improve and strengthen themselves as a young adult. We cover 8 main topics that include self-esteem, hygiene, community service, friendships/relationships, character education/legacy, etiquette, girl drama/conflict resolution and team building. These 8 topics cover a wide range of the attributes that our future leaders will need. Through our different programs, we teach and reach our youth through self-esteem building.
We have several different programs to help improve both self-esteem and academics.
Our 8-week summer camp (GIRLS University) covers those same topics and more. We include social media, respect, and responsibility, dare to be different, emotions and feelings, communication, and more. Our all-girls summer camp is a one of a kind summer camp. We expose our girls to some opportunities that may not have the chance to see and experience in school or with their families. Last year (2016) was the first year for the summer camp and our girls explored so many things throughout the camp. We had a week of college tours including Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo, Regency Beauty College in St. Peters, Mo, Ranken Technical College, Harris Stowe and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville! We also had guest speakers to talk to the girls about cyber-bullying, financial literary, beauty, fashion and proper hygiene. We also had an entire day for an all-female career fair!
Our after-school program (SELFIE-Self-esteem, Leadership, Focus, Integrity and Education) is also an 8-week program. We cover the same topics in a smaller and more intimate setting. The girls have 2 hours of lecture and activities. There is always a fun activity to go hand-in-hand with the lesson. In the after-school program the girls participate in activities like cross the line, the water challenge, community service (making tote bags to give to homeless women), inside and outside and their favorite activity is Girl Power Go!
We also have a Word Frequency program that allows both male and female students to earn free haircuts and hairstyle! The students that are 2 or more grade levels behind in reading are able to work one-on-one or in small group to learn their grade level words. Once they have learned 25 new words they are able to get a free haircut/hairstyle from selected barbers and beauticians. Students are able to participate in this program throughout the school year. This program is also a great way to help improve both Galileo and MAP testing in school.
Both our SELFIE and GIRLS University program is designed to help lower statistics for middle school/high school dropout, gang activity, teen pregnancy and increase self-esteem and academics. Our program has also help decease bullying. Our parents and participants are satisfied with the services of the program.
The lessons require the girls to think about their current position today and their plans for their future. We talk in depth about how their self-esteem effects them daily, how others opinion of them effects them and how social media plays a part in the thoughts about themselves. On the topics of hygiene we will discuss how to properly shower, use deodorant, wash and style hair, how to talk about feminine concerns and products and proper dress. During the hygiene week, we also discuss eating healthy and physical activity.
When we complete our community service project, we will make a tote bag out of a t-shirt, the girls will design them with positive affirmations or quotes and we will mail them to a women's homeless shelter with a letter about our program and our girls!
The week that we would discuss friendships/relationships we will discuss healthy and unhealthy relationships, how to make friends, how to be a leader and how to make/be a good friend. This topic will flow us into the discussion of team building. In team building week we will discuss how to be a team player, how to agree to disagree with someone and how to find your strengths in group settings.
The lovely topic of girl drama/conflict resolution is one of the best topics. It allows the girls to talk about some of the problems they have had with other girls and ways to solve those problems. The girls usually find out how much they have in common with someone who they considered their enemy. We also discuss the QUEEN way to resolve problems. Queen is an acronym for Question, Understand, Enlighten, Engage and Negotiate!
The last 2 weeks are character education/legacy and etiquette. In the character education/legacy week, the girls discuss what it means to have positive character traits. The girls make a list of at the positive qualities that they have and a list of the negative qualities, they are then challenged to make the negative traits positive become a positive one...
