Springfield School Volunteers Inc

A nonprofit organization

273 donors

When Evelyn Benedetti started volunteering in 1958 she had no idea her single act of generosity would span 56 years and impact the lives of thousands of Springfield students. She created a snowball effect that led to the establishment of a volunteer advisory council, involvement from the Chamber of Commerce, new volunteer initiatives and, ultimately, the incorporation of SSV as a nonprofit organization in February 1979. That same year First Lady Roasalynn Carter selected SSV as a model of the spirit of volunteerism, the first of many recognitions SSV would receive.

Over the years SSV expanded to include paid positions. Two of the early staff members, Helaine Sweet and Sally Wittenberg, eventually rose to the leadership position in the organization. In 2006, Denise Cogman followed suit, becoming the third staff member to advance to the leadership role.

SSV has remained a strong supporter of the Springfield Public Schools, developing programs in response to the diverse needs of the students and the district. Your donation will help us continue providing critical programming such as Read Aloud, mentoring and academic support alive.
