Sprout

A nonprofit organization

SPROUT's mission is to cultivate a food system that belongs to and is determined by the people who live in New Orleans and greater Louisiana. We do this through: - prioritizing Black and Indigenous people in everything we do - providing technical support to growers - ensuring viable markets and gardens - weaving community together - facilitating equitable wealth redistribution - advocating for policy changes to benefit farmers, the climate, and the land

The Sprout Community Farm on the Greenway is a direct extension of Sprout's mission to empower small-scale farmers and build a sustainable, community-driven food system. At the heart of our work is the belief that everyone, regardless of background or income, should have access to fresh, healthy food-and the tools to produce it. This project is a crucial step toward achieving food sovereignty for underserved communities in New Orleans, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations who have historically faced barriers to land access and healthy food options.

Through the farm, we will create more opportunities for residents to grow their own food, gain hands-on agricultural experience, and actively participate in shaping their local food systems. By providing over 160 hours of free educational programming, the farm will equip participants with the skills and knowledge they need to practice sustainable farming, make healthier food choices, and contribute to the local economy.

The Sprout Community Farm embodies our mission by bringing people together, breaking down systemic barriers, and fostering a healthier, more equitable food system for all.

Testimonials

"Thinking about what the garden means to me… it's about community. It's about family. In these past couple of years, with all of these things that we've been going through, I was shut in. I couldn't go out. I had people from the garden every week, every couple of days, coming to drop off vegetables to me, to drop off bouquets to me at my doorstep. I'm telling you, the garden is a lifeline to me."
