Square One is committed to ensuring that all children have the opportunity to succeed at school, at work, and in life by providing educational programs, family support services, health and fitness resources, and a voice in the community. We know that children grow up to become better educated and more successful academically, emotionally and socially when they have high-quality early education, nurturing adults to care for them, and a safe and healthy community in which to live. At the core of everything we do is our belief, confirmed by research, that children who begin learning early become better learners for life.

Our locations, known as our Square One Family Squares, are located in Springfield and Holyoke. Here we provide nationally accredited, award-winning child care and preschool programming, as well as resources and support services to parents and families.

Child Care and Early Learning

Research has proven that access to high-quality early learning and care is particularly important for children and families who are faced with significant challenges including homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, domestic violence, and other issues. There is a direct correlation between a high-quality early learning experience and long-term educational success, gang prevention, substance avoidance and financial independence.

Square One serves nearly 1,000 children each day, ranging in age from newborn to school age. We provide:

• Center-based child care, pre-school programs and kindergarten at our three Family Square locations in Springfield and Holyoke.
• Home-based child care in 40 locations in communities throughout the greater Springfield region.
• After-school, weekend, and summer programming for children living in homeless shelters and those involved with the Massachusetts Dept. of Children and Families.
• Fitness and nutrition initiatives to promote health and wellness.

Family Services

We understand that in order for children to learn and grow, they need the love and support of a nurturing family.

Our two Springfield Family Squares are home to Family Centers – where parents and children can meet other families, tap into community resources, learn new parenting skills, and participate in activities and support programs.

Square One is a provider of the Healthy Families program. Healthy Families is a home-visitation family support and coaching program that supports young, first-time parents and helps them create stable, nurturing environments for their children.

Other family services include:

• Job skills training.
• Parent education for incarcerated and post-incarcerated parents.
• Supervised visitation.
• Peer support groups for domestic violence victims and parents recovering from addiction.
• Family literacy programs.
