The Way: a common biblical term for manner of living...

I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk; I will counsel you, keeping my eye on you...     Psalm 32: 8

The Our Lady of the Way SDSF will benefit two target groups in our community: 

1. Volunteers like Ruth, serving and living for one year in San Francisco.

2. Elders, like Raymond, (everybody loves Raymond!) living in San Francisco on a fixed income.

These two people are not “real” but are representative of the people in our target groups! Read more below:

 Ruth came to SF to serve as a Jesuit Volunteer. She comes from a good family, and has just graduated from a prestigious university. She likes her job here in SF, but it is very challenging, and a completely new experience, working in advocacy for the poor. Ruth comes into direct daily contact with destitute families, some with little children, and it is breaking her heart to see their struggle! She feels lonely here in a new city, far from college friends and family. Living in community for the first time with other volunteers is also a new experience with its joys and frustrations. She is healing from a college break-up, and is also discerning the next step in her journey after the year of service comes to a close.

 Raymond is a senior approaching his 8th decade of life. He lives on a fixed income, and is very worried because the building where he has been renting for almost 40 years has just been sold. He is afraid that the new owners will raise his rent! He does not want to have to leave San Francisco – this is his home! Raymond has had two very significant losses in the past couple of years. He lives alone, but finds wonderful community here at St. Agnes! He is dealing with more and more physical limitations. He has a strong faith, and that is what keeps him going!

People from both of these target groups also deal with the struggle of living in our city with so many wonderful opportunities, but face the reality that they do not have the funds to enjoy many of these benefits.

We at St. Agnes, do not want spiritual direction to be one of those inaccessible benefits for our volunteers and seniors. We want to be able to offer spiritual direction to anyone who desires someone to accompany them on their spiritual journey, helping them notice how God is with them, loving and guiding them through every experience of life.

The cost of one spiritual direction session is approximately $75.00, meeting once per month.
