Mission:  Protect and Enhance the Outstanding Scenic Character of the St. Croix River Valley Landscape

The St. Croix River valley’s natural environment, scenic beauty, historic and cultural locations are a national treasure and have benefited since 1968 from protection as a unit of the National Park Service Wild and Scenic Riverway system. But dearly held values and resources can be, and have been, eroded through many small (and a few large) actions, described by former Vice President Walter Mondale as “death by a thousand small cuts”.  

Threats are generally well recognized but appropriate alternatives and solutions may not be well understood. Our mission is to help develop sound alternatives that protect the valley’s outstanding natural and historic resources and landscapes while allowing continued appropriate development that does not impair the valley’s remarkable resources and values.

The St. Croix Scenic Coalition, through its own activities and programs and together with other organizations, individuals and communities, advocates for and promotes practices that protect and enhance the character, resources, landscapes and values of the St. Croix River valley. 

PROJECTS:

The St. Croix Scenic Byway (MN), a 124-mile scenic driving route along the St. Croix River, has been designated by the State of Minnesota as a State Scenic Byway.  It promotes the protection and enjoyment of the history, scenic and recreational resources of the St. Croix River valley in Minnesota along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Donations designated for the St. Croix Scenic Byway (MN) will be used to promote the heritage and history stories reflected in the St. Croix Scenic Byway (MN) Historical Travel Guide, available online at www.StCroixScenicByway.org. 

New Project Announcement:  The St. Croix Scenic Byway recently completed a five-film historical documentary that explores the history and heritage of the St. Croix region from around 1800 to present.  The films also present the contemporary culture of the St. Croix valley and reveal its historical role as the birthplace of Minnesota.  The five-film collection is titled FOUNDING MINNESOTA and will be available in May 2017.
