St. John's Historic Cemetery Association has made significant strides in restoring the cemetery and making it inviting and visitor-friendly. The addition of signage, with a brief bio of some 20 significant persons, a large map detailing the layout, and a walking tour brochure have transformed the cemetery. No longer a "museum of monuments", the tombstones are now "talking" and serve as an open history book of the bayou region, sharing stories and mysteries that previously were buried. Hurricane Ida, which greatly impacted Lafourche Parish on August 29, 2021, took a huge toll on the historic live oak trees that surround the Historic Cemetery. Clean up of the Historic Cemetery and care for the giant oaks was costly, but imperative to save the trees for future generations. Donations are utilized in maintenance of the grounds, restoration of tombs and the antique wrought iron fence, preservation and care for the live oaks, and sharing the living story of the history that is interred in the ground at St. John's Historic Cemetery in Thibodaux.
"St. John's Historic Cemetery is a peaceful oasis, more along the lines of a sculpture garden than a cemetery."
"A National Treasure listed on the national Register of Historic Places, the cemetery brings Louisiana history in the Bayou Region to life."
