Eight facilities operate 24/7/365, supporting up to 103 individuals daily.

Stairways is an integral part of Erie's health network, collaborating closely with other outstanding community partners and organizations. We're also proud to be an affiliate of Journey Health System, headquartered in Bradford, PA.

Our Erie Legacy:

Founded over 60 years ago by a group of dedicated volunteers, Stairways was established to meet the urgent needs of individuals recovering from mental illness in our
community. With advancements in psychiatric treatments, hundreds of patients were discharged from state hospitals. Many lacked essential self-care and social skills, unfamiliar with life outside hospital walls. On April 6, 1961, 22 members of the Erie Chapter of the
National Council of Jewish Women launched "Stairways," symbolizing the journey clients took up the staircase toward social rehabilitation and a new way of life.
