Like a lifeline thrown to a person struggling to stay afloat, after 52 years, St. MAM continues to offer solace during challenging times.  

Meet Kathy, a resilient member of our community who found herself in a challenging situation after being laid off in December 2023. Despite her best efforts, she did not qualify for food stamps or unemployment benefits, leaving her in a difficult position.

Thankfully, St. Matthews Area Ministries was there to lend a helping hand. With the support of donors like you, we've been able to offer Kathy the emergency financial assistance she desperately needed & also supplemented her food needs during this very uncertain time of unemployment.  Our generous donors and community partners made it possible for Kathy to access nutritious meals and essential resources when she needed them the most. But the journey doesn't end here. With your continued support, we can ensure that individuals like Kathy receive the assistance and support they need to navigate through challenging times and rebuild their lives. Your assistance can significantly impact the lives of those overcoming adversity that we support each week, reminiscent of The Starfish Story.

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore.  Further along, he sees an older man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean.  “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” he asks.  “Because the sun is up, and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in, they will die.” “But, Mr., do you not realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot save them all, you cannot even save one-tenth of them. Even if you work all day, your efforts will not make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”
