Sugar Pine Foundation

The Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is dedicated to restoring forest diversity by saving Tahoe’s sugar pines and other white pines from the threat of a non-native, invasive fungus white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola).

Our unique approach involves identifying fungus-resistant sugar pines, collecting their cones and cultivating their progeny.  SPF primarily plants trees in fire scars with a mix of native tree species to restore both white pines and overall forest health. In the process, SPF actively educates and involves local youth and community volunteers in all aspects of its forest stewardship work.  The objectives of our organization are to:

• preserve and restore sugar pines and other white pines in their natural environment,
• restore burn scars and improve overall forest health,
• enhance the culture of environmental stewardship in Tahoe, and
• benefit the Tahoe region’s recreation and tourism-based economy.
