On April 25th, 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck Nepal, causing over 8,000 fatalities and leaving over 15,000 people injured . Many of the ancient temples were destroyed and over 40,000 homes across the country were left in ruins. Just as people were starting to find a little sense of normalcy, another earthquake of 7.3 magnitude hit Nepal on May 12th, 2015. The devastation caused by these earthquakes means that nearly a million children in Nepal were not able to return to school. 9 out of 10 schools were destroyed in the worst affected areas, making over 4,500 schools and 24,000 classrooms damaged or destroyed totally.
We are four sisters raising money to help rebuild schools in Nepal. The reason it has taken us five months since the earthquake to start the fundraising is because we want this effort to succeed and be based on sound planning as well as be a long-term venture that will keep on helping beyond the rebuilding. We founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Sundar and Neena Foundation, Inc., named after our parents. We have partnered with Dream Temple Foundation, an organization in Nepal and they will be our boots on the ground.
We are starting the rebuilding process with a school called Jan Chetna, where 3 classrooms, 1 office building, and 2 toilets need attention. The pictures on this page are of Jan Chetna at the current state and, as you can see, they need help. Please consider donating to our effort. We will be sending updates as they become available.
