Surprise Valley Culture and Arts (SVCA) an all-volunteer organization, supports culture, creativity, and creative people in Surprise Valley, California. In our three short years of existence, we have sponsored and hosted residencies and concerts with nationally renowned country, indie, and classical musicians; underwrote a reading by Oregon-based rancher and poet Anne MacKenzie; presented free concerts with the Klamath Falls band Spinning Gold and San Francisco-based singer Aviva le Fey; invited the community to a free screening of Buster Keaton's silent film, The Goat, with live musical accompaniment by valley resident Elaine Elder; sponsored a series of lectures on the natural history of Surprise Valley; produced new programs for our 24-7 community radio station, KDUP, 88.1-FM, including "Valley Tales," a series of over fifty interviews with valley residents of diverse backgrounds and ages, and "Dust Devils," a series of short readings by valley residents of their own and others' writings. SVCA, with generous support of the KAVAH Fund, has also offered college stipends to valley youth who have demonstrated a commitment to the arts and their own creative work. Our future plans include a summer youth music camp, concert, and exhibitions.
To continue doing our work, we need your support. Surprise Valley may have few residents but the ones we have are extraordinary. Let's continue the fun and exciting work of supporting the arts and artists in our wonderful corner of California.
