Susan G. Komen’s Bold Goal is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in the US by 50% by 2026. Locally, for metro Atlanta, the key component of reaching this goal is working to achieve breast health equity for African Americans, who are 45% more likely to die of breast cancer than their white counterparts.

Affordability of breast health services, lack of insurance and/or under-insurance, limited access to adequate patient education and transportation, lack of access to quality mammograms, and ineffective communication with physicians are major obstacles that Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta works to address within our 13-county service area for all residents.    This 13-county service area includes more than 47 percent of the state’s population and serves more than 4.5 million people. The service area includes Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton, and Rockdale counties.

To alleviate these barriers to care, Komen Atlanta provides screening and diagnostic services to those that do not have access or otherwise could not afford such services, along with patient navigation and treatment support services – all with a goal of increasing the number of those screened, providing diagnostic services as needed, and ultimately reducing late-stage diagnosis and breast cancer mortality.
