Syzygy Dance Project brings the transformative power of dance to underserved people. Watch a video about our outreach programs and work with veterans.
We currently have 10 ongoing projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and have danced with over 2,000 veterans, inmates, recovering addicts, patients with chronic illness, the elderly and at-risk youth.
Many of the participants in our programs face significant life challenges including poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, physical trauma and/or mental health issues. Our movement classes help cultivate a sense of empowerment, a bodily sense of freedom, and joy.
The inspiration for Syzygy Dance Project comes directly from Executive Director and Founder, Sylvie Minot. While assisting a dance class at an AIDS conference twenty years ago, Sylvie realized her desire to bring movement to those unlikely to access it. Many of the participants were dancing in their wheelchairs with oxygen masks. One of them remarked, “The entire conference was about my illness and how sick I was, yet I felt alive when I was dancing.”
By moving the body we can heal, free the mind, and take charge of our lives. We've witnessed participants transform physically and emotionally, improve their self-esteem, and express a desire to making positive changes in their lives. There are many moving stories and palpable examples of awakening and healing as a result of the powerful impact of dance and movement in our outreach programs. It is our mission to continue to bring these classes to underserved people and we need your support. Give the gift of dance and make a profound difference in people's lives.

From our participants...

“Dance fills the hole that drugs and alcohol used to fill in my life. This class really helps me.” - 23 year old incarcerated woman
“I can be myself in this class. I just enjoy it so much, because without even trying, I release my emotions.” - 20 year old woman recovering from addiction
"I received nothing but positive feedback and excitement from the inmates which is something I don't see too often. I would like to invite you to come back on a regular basis if possible. The inmates are on fire about this class.”
