Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse

A nonprofit organization

The Tri-County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is an office of health, information and service for behavioral health issues. We seek to maximize individual health through education, community outreach and service provision for the citizens of Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties.

Established in 1972, we provide outpatient and intensive outpatient behavioral health services to adults and adolescents in Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties. In addition, we provide a psychiatric hospital service, the William J. McCord Adolescent Treatment Facility, to adolescents from all over South Carolina with substance used and other mental health disorders. Our organization is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the SC Dept of Health & Environmental Control.

Testimonials

Hear from one of our former clients who came to us from Richland County - "I arrived at McCord as a young teenage girl, broken, rebellious, hurting and fresh out of juvenile detention. I was scared and felt so alone. I grew up in a loving home with both of my parents until my father was diagnosed with cancer and then died a year later. This left a huge gaping hole in my heart and my mother didn't have the tools or support to help me cope. Fast forward several years, she placed me into public school at my request and it was all downhill from there. I started hanging out with the "bad kids", drinking, doing drugs, skipping school, failing classes, going to parties, etc. The law finally caught up to me and I was sentenced to 30 days in juvenile detention and then sent to McCord.
I look back at my time spent at McCord and I feel blessed to have been placed there. The counselors and staff at McCord made me feel loved and safe. My favorite counselor was and still is, Mr. Billy Heckle. He always knew when I wasn't being honest and he wouldn't hesitate to call me out on it. I was able to work through a lot of issues while I was there and take the skills that I learned out into the real world. I remember the hard lessons that I had to learn there, about trust, self respect, doing the right thing no matter the consequences, respect for others and I found the motivation to better my life and myself.
After leaving McCord, I moved to Florida to get away from the bad influences which tried to drag me back into the lifestyle that I was working very hard to walk away from. I met my husband shortly after moving down, we have 3 beautiful children and we celebrate 14 years of marriage this year. We are both self employed and living successful lives, homeschooling our children and very involved in our community and church. When visiting family in South Carolina, I always try to stop in to share my story with the youth and tell the staff how much I appreciate them.
McCord is a much needed place. In fact, we need more places just like this throughout the country where adolescents can go to find the help they desperately need."
