Thomas Merton Center, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

TMC works to build a consciousness of values and to raise the moral questions involved in the issues of war, poverty, racism, classism, economic justice, human rights, and environmental justice. TMC engages people of diverse philosophies and faiths who find common ground in the nonviolent struggle to bring about a more peaceful and just world.

The Thomas Merton Center is Pittsburgh's Peace and Social Justice Center. Founded in 1972, TMC acts as a resource center for local grassroots activism. Currently, TMC is working on campaigns targeting affordable housing, combating Islamophobia, and the city-wide divestment of fossil fuels. TMC also houses over 20 projects tackling issues such as mass incarceration, anti-war, environmental justice, women's rights, and many others. Check out The NewPeople, our independent media newspaper and blog online at newpeoplenewspaper.com and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr!
In 2015 we awarded US Congresswoman Barbara Lee our Thomas Merton Award honoring those who have dedicated their life to peace and freedom. In 2016, local activist, Tim Stevens, was given the New Person award for local activism and we will award Freida Berrigan with the Thomas Merton Award on November 14th at the Sheraton in Station Square. To register for the event please visit our website at www.thomasmertoncenter.org. Finally, TMC has been actively supporting our Garfield community, with the East End Community Thrift Store, aka 'Thrifty.' Local volunteers keep Thrifty open, sorting donated clothing, furniture, and small household items received in the store. The Thrift store creates an affordable shopping opportunity for the community while also providing a voucher program to our city's most vulnerable people.
