What is Tabor Children’s Services? Founded in 1907 and serving the community in southeastern Pennsylvania for more than 100 years, Tabor Children's Services is a private, nonprofit child welfare agency that has been accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA) since 1997 and is dedicated to keeping children safe and families secure in Philadelphia and Bucks County.
What is the mission of Tabor Children’s Services? Tabor is committed to keeping children safe, strengthening families, and promoting independence.
What does Tabor Do?
In-Home Protection: Children and youth in Tabor’s care are survivors of abuse and neglect. Families are highly challenged, and most live well below the poverty level. Our services ensure the safety of children and youth, assist families in making their homes safe, guide youth toward self-sufficient, productive lives, and help families become the parents they always dreamed they would be.
Foster Care and Adoption: Tabor also works to find permanent connections for children who are found by the courts to be at imminent risk of harm. Foster parents are certified by Tabor and receive special training in advocacy, behavior modification and care for children with behavioral health diagnoses. Tabor provides intensive support to maintain the stability of the child. Tabor social workers and foster parents are a team that nurture the child in foster care and provide support . Efforts focus on the concerns that brought the child into placement, and permanency is achieved through family reunification, supported permanent legal custodianship or adoption. Tabor is the local adoption partner for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation.
Older Adolescents (SIL, AIP and Mentoring): Tabor offers support to address the needs of youth who are aging out of the foster care system.
The independent living (IL) component provides life skills training and supportive services for adolescents ages 14 to 18 with a focus on the skills necessary for self-sufficiency, IL offers a series of classes that address a wide range of topics including resume writing, nutrition, housing and money management.
The board extension component allows the continuation of services until the age of 21. Youth who participate in a board extension are required to be enrolled in a post-secondary education program and hold a part-time job. These youth are supervised by Tabor to ensure that they receive the support necessary to successfully complete their education and prepare to live independently.
The AIP mentoring program matches youth, ages 14 to 21, who are preparing to leave the foster care system with adult mentors who will support the efforts of Tabor to guide the youth toward independence.
What programs does Tabor Children’s Services provide? Agency services in Bucks and Philadelphia counties include adoption, in-home services, adolescent life skills programs, supervised independent living for adolescents, treatment foster care and child care for children from infancy through kindergarten.
