Tandem Community Birth Center and Postpartum House Inc

Tandem is the first free-standing, midwifery led perinatal health care facility of its kind in our region. Tandem means together, and that's the way we need to make perinatal healthcare accessible for all. We want inclusive, diverse, unique, patient-centered care for people living in the midwest.

Tandem is committed to providing comprehensive perinatal care to families of Monroe and surrounding counties regardless of ability to pay.  The pandemic has highlighted our community's need to improve outcomes as families suffer loss of income, increased isolation, and seek to avoid care where sick patients are treated. Tandem will respond to these needs with our mission to improve perinatal outcomes by trusting patients, increasing options for care, and challenging the status quo.

Tandem has three core components: educational programming, a midwifery care center and a postpartum house. Our education programming includes childbirth and lactation education, and other perinatal course offerings. Our midwifery care center, which includes a medical clinic and birth center, will open in 2022 to provide whole person care from puberty to menopause as well as perinatal services. Our postpartum house will offer 24x7 postpartum support and centralized access to postpartum services.

After receiving a $30,000 Jack Hopkins Social Services grant from the City of Bloomington, Indiana, Tandem is on its way to opening our region's first community birth center, but there is a lot of work to be done before the doors can open.  From renovating and licensing to furnishing and purchasing medical supplies, the costs are significant.
