Teatro Vivo garnered numerous nominations for acting, writing, and design from both B.Iden Payne Awards (Austin Creative Alliance) and the Austin Critics Table awards, including the Cohen New Play Award. The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture also recognized Teatro Vivo with a grant as part of NALAC Fund for the Arts national funding program to support the 2007 - 2008 theater season.
Teatro Vivo's Founders
Rupert Reyes, Artistic Director, and Jo Ann Carreon-Reyes, Executive Director of Teatro Vivo, are also the founders of the company. They bring over 65 years of combined theater experience to the company. Austin Woman Magazine recognized Ms. Carreon Reyes in 2009 for her contributions to the Austin theater scene. Austin Community College named Mr. Reyes as one of 25 Most Influential Hispanics in Austin in 2008. Mr. Reyes was selected to the prestigious Macondo Writers Workshop in San Antonio, founded by author and McArthur Fellow Sandra Cisneros. The University of Texas presented the Community Leadership Award to both Mr. Reyes and Ms. Carreon Reyes in September 2008 and they both currently serve on the Community Council for the Department of Theater and Dance at UT. Through their leadership, Teatro Vivo has maintained a productive presence in the Austin theatre scene and in the community at large.
