Tech Trek

Tech Trek is a week-long science/math camp at Stanford for developing interest, excitement, and confidence in girls entering eighth grade.

Tech Trek opens the door to a world of opportunities.  Hands-on activities in math, science and related fields develop excitement and self-confidence in young women entering the eighth grade.  Campers live the life of a college student with a full university expeience of eating and sleeping in a dorm, attending classes and using avaiable recreational facilities.  Off-camput field trips further broaden their horizons.  

Not only do these young women meet and make friends amongh like-minded peers, they are introduced to role models as instructors and guest speakers.  Post-camp mentoring provides continuing encouragement.  

"Did Tech Trek change my life? Absolutely.  One of the girls funded through this program will find the cure for cancer, save people from AIDS, become president, save the world.  And she will need all of he help and encouragement she can get."

Impact

In 2006, AAUW California surveyed the nearly 875 young women who had attended a Tech Trek Camp during the program's first four years.  From among the 230 respondents, 96% were currently enrolled in college and, far exceeding national averages, 53% were majoring in science and math-oriented fields.  Virtually all credited their Tech Trek experience with having encouraged tem to pursue a broader spectrun of educational and career options.
