The ABLE Place Inc

The ABLE Place is a sober living community for men who want to better their lives.  The house was named for the variety of ABLEs that our residents possess: 

respectABLE, accountABLE and dependABLE. 

The mission of the ABLE Place is to provide an environment that facilitates and nurtures that process by providing a clean and comfortable home for its members to thrive in their sobriety. 

The ABLE Place was conceived from the notion that recovering addicts need a clean and sober safe haven to protect them from the temptations of their addiction.  Its founder, Elaine Awand-Stearley, had worked in local detox facilities and found that the same people were coming back time after time.  The problem was that once they detoxified themselves from their drug of choice they returned home where they were subjected to the same temptations and triggers that got them addicted in the first place.  She realized that a sober place to live free from those temptations was crucial to their long-term sobriety. 

After much searching for just the right place the first sober house was purchased.  Most of the furniture was donated as was most of the work that needed to be done to bring the house up to the standard of living that Elaine had envisioned.  Within a few months the house was full and a waiting list had to be established.  It was that waiting list that inspired Elaine to buy the second house.  In July, 2014 Elaine found another house that suited her needs.  Again, furniture and work was donated to get the second house up to Elaine’s standards.  The waiting list was depleted and the second house was up and running.

More work needs to be done though.  The house that needed painting has been completed.  The next project is insulation in this drafty old house.  We need about $2,500 to insulate the Bowdoin Street house.  

But how do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time!!!  Every donation is one step closer to our goals of insulation to keep the cold out and the heat in the house.  Your generosity is appreciated beyond words.
