The Avalon Theatre is a well-known historic landmark located in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC.  The Avalon Theatre, built in 1923 as a silent, single screen movie house, houses two theaters, a 428 seat historic theater and a smaller, second-floor 165 seat theater. The Avalon operated continuously for 78 years until the theater closed suddenly in March 2001 when the theater’s commercial operator declared bankruptcy.  Avalon neighbors and film lovers created the non-profit Avalon Theatre Project (ATP) in November 2001 with the goal of reopening the theater as a first-run independent and commercial film exhibitor and community film center.

The ATP raised more than $900,000 to renovate and operate the theater through a grassroots campaign that involved more than 1,000 donors.  On April 22, 2003 the marquee lights were lit once again and the doors reopened.
