Founded in 1890, The Daily Utah Chronicle is the University of Utah’s independent, student-run campus newspaper, providing news, arts and sports coverage to the campus and downtown area. Most U students have an experience with The Chronicle during their time at the U, whether it involves shaking their heads over the opinion columns or writing for the paper.
Most Chronicle alumni—now journalists, lawyers, doctors, and business leaders—can't begin to express how much working at the paper shaped both our professional careers and our student experiences. More than a club, more than a class, for many of us, working at the paper—and winning national journalism awards along the way—was our college experience. We love "The Chrony," and we want to see it continue to serve the campus community for many years to come.
Donations to The Chronicle will go directly to a protected fun that provides scholarship stipends to the paper’s senior staff—the editor, managing editor, production manager, news editor and others who practically live in the office. For these students, working at The Chronicle is more than a full-time job, and as tuition rises, these stipends can be the difference between adding second jobs or taking on student loans.
The Chronicle, now entering its 124th year, has not been immune to the challenges facing the professional media landscape. But it’s important that the campus retains its independent student voice—a paper that’s for students, produced by students who are free to report on the University of Utah ethically and openly. And the students who lead the paper are as driven and passionate as ever about delivering campus news to the U's ever-growing population. It's the bright ideas of these students that will see The Chronicle through its current financial struggles.
