Read to Succeed!
The Einstein School www.EinsteinSchool.us is a unique charter school serving 110 children, 2nd through 8th grade, who have not been able to learn to read, write, spell, and/or speak by conventional methods. Our students make great gains in these skills and become more confident and successful in their academic studies. Our goal is that they are able to go back into the regular school system and participate in grade-level, or higher, instruction. Many of our past students are currently in AP high school classes, the Buchholz Entrepreneurial Program, SFCC, UF, the United States armed forces, and in technical apprentiship programs.
Our methods of instruction are based on 15 years of National Institute of Health studies on finding the best treatment methods for dyslexia, ie. trouble with words. Using these programs from the Neuro-development of Words - NOW!(R) Company, we teach our students the critical skills they need for sounding out words when reading. They learn to see, hear, and feel each specific mouth movement. This solid foundation in essential pre-reading skills helps the students strengthen their phonological awareness and phonics skills. Thus, reading, writing, spelling, and speech all show an improvement. We provide a 1:5 teacher to student ratio in all of our language arts classrooms which is an essential contributing factor to each child’s success. We provide a full curriculum of classes in which our methods of language instruction are incorporated daily.
Einstein has had students who could barely speak, or be understood, but because of our interventions, have learned to not only speak, but have been chosen for Gainesville Community Playhouse plays, and have been able to read and pass their grade level FCAT. We have had students come to us on a 3rd grade level, and in one to two years, we have seen three years gain. The services we provide are unduplicated in Alachua County.
How do we make a difference? Prevention.
50% of our students are on free or reduced lunches. Learning to read makes a difference. 75% of prison inmates read at a low grade level, 16% are totally illiterate.* Einstein offers at-risk students a chance to succeed, to not drop out of high school and to go on to college or a living wage trade. Einstein’s mission is to teach children to read. Reducing the prison population, keeping students in high school and beyond, all offer Alachua County a more educated populate as well as one that gives back to others.
Thank you for reading about our school!
