Operation Rescue: 19th Century Lowndesboro School Restoration Project. The Lowndesboro school was begun c. 1860 through the Freedman's Bureau with a donation from the Southern Aid Society. This school is one of the few remaining 19th Century schools for African American children in the State and the only one in Lowndes County. It is on the compendium of "Places in Peril" and without immediate attention this historic gem will be lost. It is now listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks & Heritage. It is located in the historic antebellum village of Lowndesboro, Alabama. This project aims to insure the public use of this facility and also insure that future generations will understand the school's important historical and educational significance.
Lowndes County is among the poorest 100 counties in the United States. Our mission is to positively impact education in the county as there is a direct correlation between poverty and educational opportunities. The county's graduation rate is 32.8% while the rate for the state is 69%. According to the superintendent of schools, the greatest intervention needed is drop out prevention. The Parent Connection is a program developed to increase parental involvement in the children's education through workshops, school activities, and parents Days of Service.
