Over 50% of Kentucky chidren are not school-ready when they begin kindergarten. This means they cannot write their names, identify colors, sort objects, or even follow simple directions. The reason behind this is the children do not receive consistent, positive, and loving interactions from birth through school age. The Gladys Project works with parents to ensure their children receive these interactions so the chidren will be ready for school when they begin kindergarten.

Children who are consistently and lovingly talked to and read to from birth have a larger vocabularythan those who are not. Research has shown a vocabulary gap of as many as 30 million words separates these children. This is when the educational gap begins. If children are not read to, talked to, played with, while they are infants and toddlers, they are destined to lag behind their peers the rest of their lives.
