The Harbor Of Shippensburg

A nonprofit organization

$6,063 raised by 12 donors

We opened The Harbor simply because there are few non-alcoholic options for socialization within our small town.  We felt that there needed to be something between the local bar scene and a church pot-luck.  Once we opened though and started to build friendships, we were able to see how bad the addiction is within our community; well beyond alcoholism.  As we created this community we soon became aware of the housing problem and the sobriety challenges once a person chooses to recover:  some are fresh out of rehab or jail without a home since they came from the streets, some have tapped family resources, and many only have connections with people still deep in their addiction.

After just 3 years of renting the downtown storefront, we bought the building. The building has two apartments above it.  These apartments now maned, The Lighthouse recovery house offer the assistance that people need in their recovery by getting them off the streets or negative environments and by giving them structured recovery-focused place to live surrounded by people who have recovered and by people supporting recovery.

While we are non-profit organized as a church type ministry  We rely on the  support from generous hearts of business owners, individuals, parishes, grantors, and fundraisers. As we have said from the beginning, "The Harbor is for the community funded by the community".

Currently, we owe about $49,000 on the building and would like to pay it off.
