In 2000, a group of dedicated people with a love of history met to discuss the possibility of forming a non-profit organization, with a goal to create a History Museum. Soon after, a Board of Directors was put in a place; a 501 © 3 non-profit status obtained, procured a building; conducted membership drives; established an endowment, and proudly showed many exhibits.
The late Rusty Lindemann donated the building at 720 Indiana Avenue to Wichita County. The County Commissioners signed a 50-year lease for the building to be used as the Museum of North Texas History. In 2001, the museum officially opened its doors.
The Museum of North Texas History brings history to life through our exhibits, programs, and lectures.
We show how our rich heritage built North Texas, how it is relevant to our lives today, and how it shows potential for the future.
Today, the museum is proud to be the home of Nat’s Hats, a collection of over 500 hats, the Joe Brown News set from KFDX and more!
The museum has a satellite location, Jenny to Jet, at the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport, 400 Armstrong Drive. The “Jenny” is half dedicated to Call Field, where World War I pilots trained in the Curtiss JN-D Biplane, known as the “Jenny”. The “Jet” half is a T-38 jet and tells the story of Sheppard Air Force Base. In this one place people can see the very first U.S. Aviation trainer and a jet that is still being used to train pilots today side by side!
