The Plains Community League provides service, support, and fellowship to our neighbors in The Plains, VA and surrounding areas. Our mission and vision is “neighbors helping neighbors” to build a connected community, and to provide free, local community services. All of TPCL’s operations, programs, and events are based from the John Page Turner Community House, owned and managed by TPCL, in the center of town. Our services include a free, full-day eight week summer camp for lower income children, a free Spring Break camp, a tutoring program two afternoons a week, holiday celebrations, thanksgiving meal deliveries, scholarships for continuing education, A Day in The Plains celebration to foster community, and more.
Summer Camp runs from June to August, operating from 9 AM to 5 PM, five days a week. With a commitment to providing memorable and enriching experiences for our young participants, the summer camp combines fun-filled activities, educational opportunities, and community involvement. It provides opportunities to learn leadership to teen volunteer counselors. With nutritious meals, stimulating activities, and the invaluable support of our community, the camp positively impacts both campers and the town as a whole. The generosity displayed by local businesses and individuals serves as a testament to the power of coming together for a common cause.
Our Free After-School Tutoring program, serves 27+ students with the help of dedicated volunteers. This program has been active for over 25 years and is well-respected. Tutoring for students K-12 occurs every Tuesday and Thursday. Fauquier County Public Schools provides transportation from Coleman Elementary and Marshall Middle School. Dedicated parents drive students from Thompson Elementary.
Spring Break Camp runs from April 1st to 5th from 9 AM to 2 PM. While having a week long break from school is needed, it puts work force families in a challenging position searching for childcare.. Campers will participate in crafts, games, gardening and eat healthy lunches and snacks. Parents are already asking to register their children.
Scholarships are provided for residents of The Plains 20198 zip code. Scholarships can be used for college, community college, technical training or post high school training. We are currently providing $1,000 scholarships to 12 college students. Our scholarships are dependent upon funds available through donations. We have been fortunate to have enough funds to provide significant support and hope to match or increase the support we can provide this year.
A Day in The Plains is an annual celebration of small town values. It is a day full of music, horse and carriage rides, food, games and camaraderie.
Thanksgiving meals are provided to needy families in The Plains. This past year we increased the number of families served from 33 to 44 through outreach, and expect similar or higher numbers this year. We were able to serve more families while individualizing meals to meet their cultural and diet differences.
Holiday Celebrations include Egg hunts with the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus with gifts, photo opportunities and horse wagon rides, a Valentine Tea Open House for the adults in The Plains, Leprechaun shenanigans and more! We have a strong volunteer group that maintains flags that are flown throughout town. It costs $40 to purchase a flag and metal pole with bracket. We predict needing to replace at least 25 flags and poles due to wear and tear.
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Math) classes are being offered monthly during the school year and will be included with our Summer Camp. We have a wonderful volunteer that plans and runs the classes.
We provide space for GED classes taught by PRASEC two evenings a week.
