A community foundation is a unique institution that both maintains charitable dollars in permanent endowment form, and raises new funds from many donors in a geographic area.

Programs

The Rhode Island Foundation is best known for its grantmaking program, which supports the best ideas of the nonprofit community by investing in innovative projects, the infrastructure of significant nonprofits, and encouraging advocacy. The Foundation is a major 'convener' of people and communities around significant issues. It also has particular outreach programs for such key constituencies as Latinos, gays and lesbians, and women. Equally significant is the Foundation's committment to work with philanthropic Rhode Islanders to utilize the Foundation and its grantmaking expertise to define their philanthropic goals in many other issue areas.
