For over 55 years The Arc of Northern Virginia has worked to build communities that provide opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.  Our mission is to be a leader in providing effective advocacy and indispensable direct services for families, children and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enable full, welcoming community participation.

The Arc advocates for families for quality services and supports in their communities.  We listen to our membership and develop programs that do not exist. When our membership shows signs of crisis we "call to action."

In 2009, The Arc received so many calls from families in in need of help as their child was transitioning from mandated school services to community services that we called our advocates into action.  We campaigned to our local governments to ensure the youths would have the funding they needed for vocational supports. We did not stop there. We then developed a quarterly workshops (free to the families) on important issues such as SSI and Medicaid. As families became educated we wanted to help them to navigate the complicated systems of disability services further. We then created an extensive education series which included the youth with disabilities to help them to realize their future. Today, these sessions involve professionals and families building knowledge and relationships to create productive lives for those with disabilities, creating "A Life Like Yours".
