Theatre Horizon brings Philadelphia’s finest professional actors and artists to Norristown to present compelling, contemporary theatre. We are advancing the revitalization of Norristown through educational programming, community outreach, partnerships with other nonprofit organizations, and a passionate commitment to artistic excellence. Founded in 2005, Theatre Horizon has become a lauded contributor to the arts in Montgomery County, annually staging a critically-acclaimed season, reaching over 950 children each year through our drama classes and camps, and pioneering an autism drama program that inspires imagination and social development in individuals on the autism spectrum. These programs are the building blocks of our Theatre Horizon community in which all participants are encouraged to grow. Our offerings provide opportunities to understand unfamiliar perspectives, discuss common struggles, and simply enjoy a good story together.
We produce professional productions of thoughtful and inspiring plays and musicals. "Top-quality Theater is no longer confined to Center City," proclaimed the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER when we opened our new venue in 2012. In recognition of our work, Theatre Horizon was recently awarded a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts and received the American Theatre Wing's National Theatre Company Award—one of only twelve companies in the nation to be honored with this prestigious award from the organization that presents the Tonys each year.
From the beginning, Theatre Horizon has produced critically-acclaimed productions that fulfill our mission of connecting audiences and students with professional theatre artists through relevant and compelling theatre. Critics and community have raved about Theatre Horizon’s musicals such as THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, SPRING AWAKENING, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, INTO THE WOODS, and BLACK NATIVITY.
High quality education programs, run alongside our award-winning annual season of plays and musicals, connect children with professional theatre artists, and bring many of Philadelphia’s finest actors into Montgomery county classrooms for the enrichment of our community’s children. We have a fierce commitment to including the underserved and special needs populations in our education work.
Using a variety of theatrical techniques, Theatre Horizon's Autism Drama Program inspires imagination, communication, and interest in personal relationships for individuals on the autism spectrum. Our classes help students develop social skills, verbal expression, empathy for others, and a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. The program includes classes to serve two different age cohorts: Youth Drama for ages 10 to 16, and Playwriting for ages 17 to 30. And, thanks to our donors, we are able to provide this program on a sliding payment scale, with a cost to families as low as $11 per class.
Through partnerships with area nonprofits, and our scholarship program, we also offer a number of free programs for Norristown students. Our work with our Norristown students is incredibly important, especially as a growing body of studies present compelling evidence connecting student learning in the arts to a wide array of academic and social benefits, especially for underserved students. Through our Autism Drama Program, After School Drama Clubs, Summer Drama Camps, Theatre School and In-School Workshops, this season alone we will reach over 1,000 area students.
