The Torch and 180, as told by bullet points:

  • Rhonda faced a rough divorce and left her and her then 15-year-old daughter homeless and living with various friends.
  • Sarah, who was injured and could not work, also became homeless and lived in her rusted out, but American made car.
  • After a long struggle to get back on their feet, Rhonda and Sarah desperately wanted to help others who may find themselves in similar situations and to show others there is ALWAYS Hope!
  • One day Sarah said, "Rhonda, what if we get a food truck and can drive to people in need. We can cook them freshly prepared food and offer them other free services as well."
  • Rhonda replied, "Boom! I like the way you think. We can be mobile and help people right where they are at...for free!"
  • November 22, 2012 The Torch became an offically licensed 501(c)3.
  • February 21, 2013 The Torch website was launched and fundraising began.
  • May 2014, began driving the food-truck to various areas across Michigan to cook and serve 100% free hot meals.
  • In only 5 months The Torch food-truck served 3,750 free meals.
  • The Torch was founded on ensuring 100% of ALL donations go right back into The Torch. Both co-founders have committed to not taking a cent of the donations made to The Torch and to use all donations to keep the food truck on the road serving free meals.
  • The Torch noticed people with disabilities were having trouble finding jobs and started a new nonprofit - Torch 180.
  • Torch 180 trains students with disabilities and then helps them seek employment.
  • 100% of Torch 180 students have passed his/her Food Handler ServSafe certifications
  • 100% of second year Torch 180 students have passed his/her ServSafe Allergens certifications.
  • We have a 75% student employability success rate.
  • Torch 180 is currently fundraising to purchase a building where we can expand culinary training for students with disabilities, by running a full functioning restaurant where students learn to cook, serve, clean, cashier, how to wash dishes, deal with customer complaints etc.
