Imagine… Your child grows up with dreams, just like anyone
else.
We are Mark and Beth Kessler, founders of Third Horse
Coffee. We’re parents to six children, three of whom we adopted from China. Our
youngest, Josiah, was diagnosed with an intellectual disability in 2016.
Imagine… Realizing that meaningful employment opportunities
are scarce.
As Josiah approached adulthood, we began searching for job
opportunities that would provide him with purpose and a sense of belonging. We
quickly learned that approximately 80% of people with intellectual
disabilities are unemployed. The options were limited, and we knew
Josiah—and so many others—deserved more.
Imagine… Discovering a way to make a difference.
During our search, we came across a video of a coffee shop
that employed adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We saw
the potential for something similar in our own community, but at first, we
thought, maybe someone else will do it.
Imagine… Realizing that you are the one
meant to take action.
As Josiah neared the end of his high school life skills
program, we kept coming back to the idea of a coffee shop. It was clear this
wasn’t just a passing thought—it was a calling. A place where Josiah could
thrive, where others like him could find meaningful work, and where the
community could experience the joy of inclusion.
In the fall of 2022, we stepped out in faith and
launched Third Horse Coffee, a nonprofit with a mission to provide
adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities employment, purpose,
and community.
Imagine the power of a coffee shop where inclusion isn’t an
afterthought—it’s the foundation.
Since launching, we have:
How You Can Help
