Thomas Circle Singers

A nonprofit organization

19 donors

Since its 1976 founding Thomas Circle Singers-"Voices That Make a Difference" has been dedicated to providing chamber choral performances of the highest artistic quality for the enjoyment of District audiences and to raising awareness and support for social service nonprofits addressing the pressing needs of District residents. TCS seeks to increase appreciation for contemporary choral arts and chamber repertoire by performances that emphasize 20th and 21st century composers, including premiere presentations. TCS partners each season with one social service organization, donating a portion of concert ticket proceeds to the partner and using communication to the TCS audience base and the social service organization presentation during performance to raise awareness of the organization among audience, singers and donors. For these efforts TCS received the 2000 "Washingtonian of the Year" award by Washingtonian Magazine.

Based at Thomas Circle, first at the Luther Place Memorial Church in 1976 and now at the National City Christian Church, the group has evolved to a well-respected and artistically vibrant 32-voice auditioned ensemble of volunteer and semi-professional musicians. TCS performs a four-concert season in neighborhoods throughout the District. TCS' community engagement includes:

  1. programs that facilitate audience appreciation and understanding of choral repertoire through program notes and special events featuring Artistic Director James Kreger in conversations with living composers about their work and the creative process
  2. partnership with concert beneficiaries that include promotion of their work, impact and volunteer opportunities at concerts
  3. facilitating opportunities for TCS singers and friends to donate their time and talents to the beneficiary’s own events
  4. donating a portion of concert ticket proceeds (50%) from two of the four performances to the partner organization.

TCS concerts have raised more than $150,000 for beneficiary partners. Past beneficiary partners include organizations such as the DC Creative Writing Workshop, Men Can Stop Rape, The Green Door, Transitional Housing Corporation, the Healthy Babies Project, Life Pieces to Masterings and Hanna House. For the 2011-2012 season TCS partners with the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing, to help fund their program supporting District low-income under-served children and their families in the District that have lost a loved one to violence.
