THRU Project empowers youth and young adults who have experienced foster care by providing the consistent support, resources, and connections they need to thrive as they transition into adulthood. Through our core programs—including Mentorship, Housing, BreakTHRU life-skills training, Fostering Connections, and Pass to Success—we help young people build stability, independence, and confidence for their future. We are also home to the Heart Gallery of South Central Texas, a powerful initiative that shares the stories and portraits of children in foster care waiting to be adopted, inspiring families to open their hearts and homes. Together, these programs create a bridge of opportunity, ensuring that no young person ages out of foster care without guidance, advocacy, and hope.

Who We Are

The mission of THRU Project is to help youth overcome the challenges of growing up in the foster care system by providing guidance, support and advocacy in order to prepare them for life after foster care.

THRU Project began in September 2011, as the only mentoring program for the young men and women leaving foster care in the San Antonio area. Many youth grow up in the foster care system and may endure twenty or thirty different homes (and schools) during that time. These same youth often leave foster care without permanent housing, little education or job training and, most important, without a single, trusted adult to support them in this critical time. Without help, the majority of these youth will be homeless, incarcerated or victimized within two years of leaving foster care.

THRU Project volunteer Advisors (mentors) become that trusted adult for youth to lean on. Advisors help youth navigate their resources, advocate for them when needed and, above all, let former foster youth know they are not alone anymore.
