Ever since it was built in 1882 by Barton S. Tibbits, the Tibbits Opera House has been an integral part of community life in Coldwater, Michigan. It now stands with a beautiful, fully restored “second empire” facade. Efforts continue to restore the interior and insure the facility is available to provide arts and entertainment for the next 100 years.

Tibbits puts Coldwater on the map as one of the few small cities in the nation with a social and cultural center of such grandeur. It retains much of its original character and still functions as originally intended.

Rich in history and ambiance, Tibbits offers theatre-goers nearly perfect acoustics, an intimate 499-seat setting, and a fine array of performances throughout the year. Over the years, it has hosted a vast range of productions, from circus sideshows to vaudeville, from famous musicians to school productions. Since its opening with a performance of Maid of Arran, the Tibbits stage has been graced with noted performers of every era.

Tibbits is well known for its professional summer theatre, this year in its 52nd season.  In 2005, USA Today named Tibbits Summer Theatre one of “10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway.”  Tibbits has an entertainment series to offer something for every taste.

Children’s programming includes Popcorn Theatre presented by the professional summer theatre company and special programming that brings performing artists to area schools.

Tibbits also offers art exhibits, touring artists and special events. It is a community facility used for school musicals, community theatre plays, band concerts, dance recitals, service club benefits and corporate meetings.
