Statement of Need                                                                   

UNHCR’s Annual Global Trends report estimates there were over 59.5 million forcibly displaced people at the end of 2014. These numbers are estimated to have risen in 2015 and are projected to rise as global conflicts; political, ethnic or otherwise continue to create instability in communities and displacement of individuals and families. Most displaced persons flee into neighboring nations which often lack the infrastructural resources to permanently support those seeking refuge. Because voluntary repatriation is not a viable option for most displaced persons, due to continued threats to their lives and wellbeing in their home countries, about 1% of the world’s refugees are allowed third nation resettlement. Half of these are resettled within the United States.

According to reports by the Idaho Office for Refugees, thousands of refugees with personal stories of persecution, escape and survival, have been resettled in Idaho since 1975.These are extremely resilient individuals/families that have the capacity to add significant value in the enhancement of their host communities. However, the refugee resettlement experience is described by many as simply overwhelming. In addition to the pervasive implications of their traumatic experiences, refugees are also inundated with issues related to successful integration.They also have high rates of risk factors for mental disorders e.g. post-traumatic stress disorder.  These generate significant emotional distress that could lead to psychosocial dysfunction and encumber productivity.

TSWSC workers strive toward the restoration of dignity & respect, safety & trust, as well as power & control for the individuals we serve. With services driven by individual needs, TSWSC workers and clients collaboratively design individualized treatment plans to promote growth in a compassionate environment.
